Igor Butman is a People’s Artist of Russia, a world-renowned saxophonist, producer, and influential public figure. A global force in contemporary music, he has served as the definitive link between the Russian and American jazz traditions, elevating Russian jazz into a vital component of the international cultural landscape.

Butman’s musical journey began in Leningrad, performing in the legendary ensembles of David Goloshchekin and Oleg Lundstrem, as well as participating in the avant-garde projects of Sergey Kuryokhin and the iconic rock bands Kino and Akvarium. After graduating from Berklee College of Music (Boston) and performing with the legendary Lionel Hampton Orchestra in New York, he forged his signature style: a fusion of flawless technical precision and profound emotional intensity.

His album Magic Land, recorded with Chick Corea and Jack DeJohnette, became a global jazz bestseller.

In 1999, Igor Butman founded the Moscow Jazz Orchestra, which has grown over the past quarter-century into one of the world’s elite big bands. Together with his Quartet, the Maestro regularly represents Russia at major festivals across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

  • Triumph of Jazz, Jazz Seasons, and The Future of Jazz festivals.
  • Butman Music Records – His independent record label.
  • Igor Butman Jazz Club – Consistently ranked among the Top 150 jazz venues worldwide by DownBeat Magazine.

In 2022, under Butman’s initiative, Russia celebrated the Centennial of Russian Jazz with a nationwide festival program.
